Gum Removal - How to Get Gum Out of the Carpet

Gum removal is quite easy to do, but there are still a multitude of questions from people who want to know how to get gum out of the carpet. Some people even get so dispirited by the sight of ugly gum blobs they have difficulty removing, that they actually replace the carpet in frustration.

You will hardly ever have to do that. Here is the answer.

Depending on what the situation may be, you will need to have the following materials available:

Some iceA plastic zipper bagA hammer or similar tool you can use to pound or beat on the gum when it gets hardA spatula or scraperCanned refrigerant or liquid compressed air usually used to dust off computer keyboards.Dish washing liquidCitrus solvent or citrus gelVacuum cleaner or carpet steamer

Now here are the steps to follow:

First, try to get the gum hard and brittle by freezing it. Put some ice in a zipper bag. Close the bag, place it over the gum and leave it there for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary, until the gum is brittle. Use the hammer or other heavy object to beat on it and break it into little pieces. Scrape off the fragments with the spatula or scraper and use the vacuum cleaner or carpet steamer to remove them from the carpet.

You may also try to freeze the gum by using the compressed air or canned refrigerant. Hold the can upside down, close to the gum, and squirt the gas unto it. When it gets hard, follow the procedure above.

If this doesn't get rid of all the gum, try using a citrus based solvent or gel, which you can get at any cleaning supply store. Spray the solvent unto the gum or cover it with the gel and leave it for 10-15 minutes. This will cause it to decompose, lose its stickiness and get hard so that you can scrape it off the carpet fibers.

Sometimes a stain is left on the carpet after the gum is removed. That is because gum is made from synthetic latex, but usually has various other additives like sweeteners, softeners, flavorings and colorants to modify its properties. These stains are usually easy to remove also.

First try a dilute solution of dish washing liquid - about half ounce per gallon. Apply this solution to the stained area and leave it to react for about 10 minutes. Blot with a clean white towel until all the color is gone. Blot - don't rub, because you may just cause the stain to spread to surrounding areas.

If this doesn't remove all the stain, try the same procedure, using the citrus solvent or gel.

Finally, vacuum and groom the carpet when it is dry.

Be sure to always wear gloves when handling cleaning chemicals.

Also, do not scrape the carpet too hard or you may damage the fibers.

Have fun!

Top 10 Reasons to Always Keep Hand Wipes Handy

Hand wipes: they are probably not something that you would think of in most passing conversations, with exception to maybe an instance where you just got your hands all grimy and require them. While the advent and popularity of hand sanitizing products is becoming more and more commonplace (heck, some grocery stores even offer bottles out front so you can sanitize your shopping cart handles), hand wipes are also an option. Generally, they can serve as better options than just relying upon hand sanitizer. What follows are the top reasons why it makes a good deal of sense to always keep some hand wipes, well, handy during your day to day endeavors.

Top 10 Reasons to Always Keep Hand Wipes Handy

1. Let's face it, it's a dirty world in which we live and that bathroom sink and welcoming bottle of antibacterial soap are not always close enough for comfort.

2. Do you touch money on a daily basis? Did you know that money is the dirtiest thing in the world that you can touch...because so many people are always touching it? With hand wipes, you can clean the green after you tender payment.

3. So you had to use the restroom urgently and this required that you made a stopover at a place that you normally would never frequent. After squatting to ensure that your health is safe in the restroom, you suddenly realize upon trying to wash your hands that there is no soap. And it's hand wipes to rescue once again.

4. Have you ever been on a picnic? Many parks don't feature washrooms these days. A paper towel or napkin can help. But what about getting the grime off your hands and sanitizing them before and after you eat?

5. Do you work out at the gym frequently? Most gym machines are filthy, even if they appear to be clean. Sweaty people working out in them every few minutes assures this metric. But you can easily workout and breathe easy by wiping them down and sanitizing them beforehand.

6. Do you have children running around? Kids are a joy, but they can tend to get rather dirty rather quickly. Some handy hand wipes will eradicate this worry from ever concerning you.

7. The grocery store is our portal to delicious culinary eats. It can also be the gateway to you getting sick. So be certain to wipe down those shopping cart handles and kill any germs on them before touching them with your hands.

8. So you don't use paper money because it is literally filthy. Good call, money is very gross when you really think about how many hands it crosses. But guess what? That debit pin machine at the store sees just as many germ laden fingers touching it, too. So wipe it down real quick before touching it.

9. Made a mess by accident? You will miss those hand wipes when you need them the most.

10. Just want an easy way to sanitize things? Hand wipes are compact and fit in most pockets and cozily into most pocketbooks.

Best Solutions for Your Carpet

Everyone wants a clean carpet, with a nice, fresh look. There are lots of kinds of solutions that contain no hard chemicals. Many people with animals look for solutions to remove the pet hair and there are some answers for them. We will discuss some of the many things you could use for your carpet.

There are many problems that a carpet can have, from the bad odor to different kinds of stains, but you don't have to worry too much about that. There are things you can do for every sort of stain. And you'll be surprised how handy they are. Ammonia is one of the carpet cleaning solutions. You sure have it in your house and it's totally inexpensive. This is almost a universal cleaning solution and your carpet is not an exception. But you have to be careful and let the windows opened for good ventilation when using ammonia. Your airways should be protected as well. Keep in mind that pets are sensitive to this solution and it might be a good idea not to expose them.

Baking soda is even a better idea for carpet cleaning. It's cheap, non-toxic and really easy to find, you probably already have it next to the ammonia. This solution will help you get rid of stains and bad odor from your carpet. When you have a stained spot, put some baking soda on the area and then hot water over it. The best idea is to spray the water. This natural solution will work wonders for you even for those stains that are harder to remove; you'll just need to put more baking soda and brush the area. Leave it there several minutes and then clean it with warm water.

A solution made of ammonia with a small part of vinegar and water will give you another useful tool for your carpet cleaning. Stains and odor wouldn't be great trouble if people would do the cleaning on time. You shouldn't delay this because in time, they will get tougher to get rid of. Once on for a few months, it would be enough to keep your carpet clean and odor free.

Another solution is made from club soda and salt. The results are guaranteed, it is effective and simple; just put them on the stained spot, first you put the salt and then the club soda; let it there for about an hour and then just clean it. The stain will disappear without traces.

How to Clean Grout - Without Wanting to Tear Out the Tiling

Have you ever felt so frustrated while trying unsuccessfully to clean the grout between your tiles, that you just want to tear out the tiling and replace everything? Well, don't be dismayed. You are not alone. Grout cleaning can be really difficult, and may be a big challenge if you are not familiar with the process. Grout enhances the appearance of your tiles with its wide array of complimentary colors, but it is composed of mostly porous material and is a good absorbent for all the detritus like grease, dirt, soap scum, carbonate scaling, cooking oil, and sediments that gets smeared over it with time. That is why it is necessary to coat all grout with a sealant after installation. The sealant will wear off after a couple of years though, and sometimes the grout is not sealed at all. So what is the easiest way to clean that grout? The following must be taken into consideration:

The kind of tiling. Is it comprised of porous material like marble, granite or stone? The kind of deposit on the grout. Acidic or alkaline? The overall physical condition of the grout. Is it gouged in some areas? What equipment is available to do the cleaning? What chemicals may be used to remove the specific type of deposits? What about the sealing?

There are basically two types of tiles - synthetic or man-made tiles like ceramic and natural or organic tiling like granite, slate, etc. Synthetic tiles are impervious to almost all chemicals or cleaning agents that may be used, but natural tiles are porous and will be severely damaged or etched by acidic chemicals.

Generally speaking, kitchen and hallway tile and grout are more prone to be covered with alkaline deposits, and are best cleaned with alkaline (high pH) tile and grout cleaning solutions, while tile and grout in bathrooms usually have deposits which require low pH (acidic) solvents for removal.

Sometimes grout in some areas may be so badly gouged that it may require repair before or after further treatment.

Small areas of tiling and grout may be cleaned with a small, non-metallic brush, but for larger areas, optimal equipment is a turbo tool powered by a truck mounted machine generating pressures of up to 1000 psi, vacuum of up to 14 inches mercury, and temperatures of up to 250 degrees F. In each case, the cleaning solution is applied liberally over the tile and grout, left to react for at least 15 minutes, and then extracted and rinsed off the tile and grout. High temperatures and agitation with a machine or grout brush will assist the cleaning process.

Finally after you have the tile and grout looking sparkling clean again, be sure to insist on sealing it with an appropriate water-based or solvent-based sealant, to protect the grout from re-soiling and making it easy for you to clean, without wanting to tear out the tiling.

A good sealant will remain on the grout for about two professional cleanings. So clean your tile and grout professionally at least once a year to avoid this kind of frustration.

While you might be tempted to do all of this yourself, in the long run, unless you are dealing with a relatively small area, the easiest and most cost-effective thing to do, is to call in a professional.

What You Should and Shouldn't Do When You Have Smoke Damage

Whenever there is a fire in your home, some of the greatest damage is actually caused by the smoke caused by the fire. This is largely due to the pervasive nature of smoke. Whenever it travels through your home, smoke will quickly travel upward, using any crevices and pathways that it can find. This includes power outlets, plumbing and more. Because of this, smoke damage can be found in many areas that you may not first realize were affected. Because of the delicate nature of smoke damage, it is important to know what to do and what not to do in the case that your home is damaged by smoke.

What to Do

· You should start by blowing off or vacuuming any loose soot from any carpets, drapes or upholstery. You can then use old towels, linens or tarps to avoid any additional damage.

· If any food was open when your home was damaged, throw it out immediately. It could be damaged by smoke and soot, making it not only unpleasant, but dangerous to consume.

· If you have lost power as a result of the fire in your home, make sure to clean all food out of the refrigerator and freezer. If your power remains out, leave the doors propped open so that it can air out properly. This can help avoid many terrible odors.

· Wipe soot off of any and all smooth surfaces. This includes porcelain, chrome, and Formica in your bathrooms and kitchen. If left in place, soot can cause etching in these areas.

· Change your air filters, and tape damp cheesecloth over all of the outlet and intake registers in your home. This will help capture any lingering soot before it enters your rooms.

· Lastly, open doors and windows if the temperature allows. This will help to diminish any lingering odors.

What Not to Do

· If you have any walls that are flat painted or papered, talk with a local professional before cleaning. If cleaned incorrectly, you could just make the problem worse.

· Beyond blowing off or vacuuming, do not attempt any further cleaning of carpets or furniture.

· Do not operate any electrical components that were near fire or water before a professional ensures that they were not damaged. If in doubt, replace these appliances for your safety.

· If your ceiling is wet, do not use any of the light fixtures or ceiling fans. This could result in a short circuit or other serious electrical issue.

· Do not hesitate to call a professional to help you clean up your home!

Although there are many things that you can do yourself when you have smoke damage, it is important to have a professional cleaner come and survey the full extent of what has occurred. In addition to providing cleaning that will not further damage to any of your home, they can give you tips and advice for managing any soot that remains in your home. Smoke damage can be very destructive. With proper cleaning and maintenance, however, things can be restored to just the way they were before.

Get Rid Of Car Clutter

Some of us have messy cars that are full of clutter. Or maybe they don't really have much car clutter, just trash! Besides keeping things clean and somewhat organized, it is possible to get tickets in some states for having trash laying around in the car (the actual ticket would be for not having/using a trash bag)! Let's take a few minutes and see what we can easily do to declutter our cars.

Get Rid Of Trash
Seriously, the first step is to grab a trash bag and go through the car. Anything half eaten, half drank, etc, needs to go. Wrappers, old paperwork, receipts, all need to go. If it wasn't important enough to take out of the car, it is fine to through in the garbage. This should take you about 5 minutes.

Now that you have the trash out of your car, put a small trash bag into the car to keep yourself, and others, from dumping trash on the seats and floor. I recommend putting a grocery bag around the shifter. This keeps it handy and in sight - you will know when it is full and can grab it on the way out of the car and toss into a garbage can. Voila - no more trash!

Organize Compartments
Get rid of any actual clutter in the glove box, side compartments, and trunk. This may not be trash, but it is clutter! Things like magazines, extra chapstick, multiple pairs of sunglasses, can all be taken out of the car. I know that I tend to cram things into the center console of my car when I'm in a hurry - time to take those things out so that we can use the space we have for things we might actually need:

flashlightone pair of sunglassesmapscar insurance and registration paperworkcar manualphone chargernapkins or towels for emergency use

Doing all of this should only take ten minutes. You should now have a cleaned up car - if you really want to go all the way take the time to wipe down the inside with something like a damp cloth to clean of the smooth surfaces, vacuum the interior, and give the outside a good wash. It's nice to drive around in a clean car that isn't full of clutter!

After taking care of the cleaning, don't forget to make sure that you have the proper safety equipment. At a minimum you should have:

Cables to jump start your car in the event of a dead batteryJack to elevate your car should you get a flat tireTire iron to use on the nuts holding your wheelFlashlight or other light source - have you checked to see if the batteries are still good recently?

Enjoy your clean and safe car!

Keeping Your Bedroom Clean At All Times

One of the most important rooms in a house is the bedroom. It is also the only room in a house that we spend a large chunk of our time either snoring or scheming on how well to tackle the furious jabs that life throws our way. It is therefore crucial to ensure the bedroom is kept sparkling clean, organized and comfortable at all times. Cleanliness is not all about spreading your bed every morning but also taking the time to see to it that all other parts of this heavenly abode in your house are clean as well. It is very easy to clean a bedroom.

To start off, get rid of anything that doesn't belong in the bedroom and take them to their respective places. This include the dirty clothes that you might have send flying across the room after work the other day or a plate and cup that you might have used the previous night. Did you take wine in bed while watching television? Get rid of the bottles and the glasses first thing. Use a trash can to collect other irrelevant like papers and empty bottles. You should then take a vacuum and glass cleaner to work on the windows and any glass furniture in your bedroom.

Sometimes, our beds appear untidy with some things we assume are important, only for them to be an eyesore. Do you have toys lying around? Snacks and food items you don't even require? What is an old magazine you last read three months ago doing your bedroom anyway? Don't you have a library to keep that novel filling your bed drawers? If you don't, improvise some better way of keeping such away from the bedroom.

Laundry is one of the laziest activities that many people rarely look forward to. You don't have to remove dirty clothes from your bedroom only when you want to wash them. You can dump all used towels, bed sheets, rugs, comforters, window curtains into a laundry basket. Replace each removed used laundry with fresh ones and keep the used ones away, awaiting washing at some other time. Please don't forget that you have dirty laundry hanging around the house, wash them as soon as possible.

Dusting is one of the easiest exercises to carry out in a house. Therefore, use a dump piece cloth to dust walls, ceilings, walls, accent lamps and windows. Also, take time to dust the fans and spot cobwebs plus the junks they attract. If you have any decorative pieces in the bedroom, keep them glittering by paying them a visit as well. If you encounter several cobwebs in your bedroom, just know that it is an indicator that all is not going on well with your bedroom cleanliness.

Cleaning the bedroom must be done on a daily basis. On weekends, be more thorough and move furniture around to access even the minute and hidden dirt. Hire professional cleaners once in a while to help put your bedroom in order for you.

In Need Of A Penetrating Concrete Driveway Sealer?

If you have any plans on doing some finishing touches on your garage, basement or driveway, then you should see to it that you look for water-based penetrating concrete driveway sealer. By adding a layer of this material, you will be able to ensure that you protect whatever concrete surface you may have from various outside factors. In addition to this, adding a layer of water based penetrating concrete sealer will make the surface more durable as well. Without a doubt, using this kind of finishing will boost the aesthetic and the functional value of your home.

Just make sure that you wait for the concrete to completely dry and settle before you add a layer of penetrating concrete driveway sealer. Manufacturers will always suggest waiting at least 7 to 14 days for your newly laid surface to fully cure. Wait for a couple more days before adding the layer of finishing. The protection afforded by the first layer should last for a couple of months. If you think that the finishing has started to wear off, then simply add another layer on top of it and you will be good to go.

A water based penetrating concrete driveway sealer will bond very well to the surface of any concrete, thus providing a durable layer of protection and strength. Since the finishing will penetrate the outer layer of the concrete surface, you will be able to expect a much stronger sealing effect as opposed to the other kinds of concrete sealer. Believe it or not, you will not even have to work with other kinds of solvent in order to use your water based penetrating sealer. All you need is a container, a brush, the sealer, and a concrete surface to put it on.

Using a water based penetrating concrete driveway sealer will also allow you to improve the aesthetics of the surface that you will put it on. With just a later of a good sealer, the concrete surface will look so much smoother and will actually be smoother to the touch as well. This is why this kind of finishing is very popular among homeowners with concrete walls and sidewalks. If you have a raw and exposed concrete surface in your home, all you have to do is to brush a layer of a penetrating concrete driveway sealer and watch it turn into a smoother and more finished surface right before your eyes.

What's Living In Your Rug?

The best kind of rug owner makes sure that his or her rug is cleaned and maintained. This usually includes taking the rug in to be cleaned by professionals, but some rug owners choose to clean their rugs at home by themselves.

It's suggested that rug owners clean their rugs themselves through vacuuming periodically to keep it in good nick.

However, these repetitive basic cleans, by means of vacuum or maybe a gentle spot treatment chemical, without a professional clean every 6-12 months can leave some pretty nasty things trapped in your rug.

What's living in your rug, you ask.

If you use your home vacuum to clean your rug, you can maintain you it and eliminate sometimes up to 80 to 85% of dirt and dry soil. This is a great improvement and will make it cleaner for longer.

However, unfortunately the remaining percentage of dry soil, dust and dirt is the nastiest stuff because it is heavier or too small and will accumulate over time. And using your vacuum over and over will never pull these out from the deepest fibres of your rug.

Of course, there are those who try to clean their rug themselves by using a pressure hose to blast the rug which will remove a lot of dirt along with most of the rug as well. Please, Please never use this method to clean your rug, it will damage it beyond repair.

Professionals now use of state of the art machines to remove soiling from your rug. You can bet that anyone in the business for long uses more gentle methods to ensure that the rug comes back.

So while vacuuming your rug might make it look a little better in the short term, it may be full of heavy sediments slowly killing it. What's more disturbing is that what in your rug might be slowly killing you!

You'll never quite know exactly what's living in your rug. Fibres in rugs are capable of holding so many different bacteria and mould spores that become trapped.

I'm not saying all this to scare you either; I really just want everyone to know about one of the best things that they can do for the cleanliness in their home. After all remember that the flip side is that if you didn't have a rug then you would be breathing all of the dirt and bacteria.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars has gone into the research of machinery and technology that will work together to remove these living and damaging things from your rug or carpet. Why wouldn't you take advantage of this; it's really the best way to completely clean any carpet.

A clean rug is beneficial to you and everyone who lives in proximity of that rug. It removes dust and dirt from any living space like an air filter for your home.

Maintaining a clean rug is very important so vacuum often. But to get rid of what's living in your rug is to take it to the professionals and get it cleaned regularly.

Hardware Store Carpet Shampoo - Don't Waste Your Money!

Using the low-strength chemicals that came with your low-power extractor only compounds the problem faced by the do-it-yourself carpet cleaner. All that back-breaking work will ultimately be for naught because everything in those little jugs are watered down versions of what the Professionals use.

For example, let's start with the extraction shampoo (shampoo being a misnomer, there is little foam). As a pro, I've used cleaners that are diluted to a strength of one ounce per gallon of water. Because of their high pH, they are very good at grease emulsification at that strength. Now look at the bottle that came with your home version. I've seen consumer products that call for 2 to 4 cups of their "shampoo". They keep the pH lower to prevent you from browning your carpets, so even at that strength, it's not as effective. Also, it leaves a lot of quickly re-soiling residue in your carpets

Her's another little tip. If you are using one of those little rotary scrubbers that were so popular at one time, quit. Now. They do use actual shampoo to dissolve the crud in your carpets. Pour a little of the rug shampoo on a small plate and let it dry. Once dry, put your finger in the residue. It will be very sticky. That is one of the reasons your carpets resoil so quickly. Professional carpet "shampoo" dries to a fine powder that comes out of your rugs the first time you vacuum them.

Another joke is the pet odor products available at the hardware store. They don't work. They merely mask them. This is a story for another time.

The stain removers available are not that bad, but they don't tell people how to use them. I will. First, I am going to reveal a secret that will startle and amaze you. I don't know if other professional cleaners know it. I was told this secret by another pro on his deathbed. I have told no one else, until now. The tools needed to remove 99% of the stains on your carpets are 1) an old butter knife, 2) an absorbent towel, 3) an old toothbrush and 4) denture cleaner tablets. That's the big secret.

First, mix a tablet with about a cup of water. Use the toothbrush to mix a little solution into the stain. Don't scrub too hard, you'll make your carpet fuzzy. Now use the knife to "squeegee" the stain out of the rug. Then use the towel. Folding it several times put it on the spot and stand on it. No stomping, just stand there for about a minute. The moisture will wick into the towel and be there instead of in your carpet.

Constant attention to spots and stains will ease the need for overall cleaning. Scan your carpets and remove the visible stains about once a month. Call the pros when traffic lane soiling becomes apparent. And don't tell anyone about the denture tablets.

The Frustration of Carpet Filtration

Have you noticed in your home that blackish film around the edges of your carpet? Typically it is found just beneath the base board and protrudes about one inch from the wall. It is not only an eye soar but also an embarrassment. It simply makes us look like bad housekeepers. So, what causes it? Well, it really doesn't matter what causes it the more important question is what can be done about it. But for those "I have to know" people reading this, filtration, as it is called, is caused by one of two things.

One possible cause is the way air flows through the home via the heating and air system. As the house "breathes" dust and dirt is carried invisibly through the air and when the air conditioning system turns off the dirt and dust simply floats down to the floor. Over time dirt and dust becomes noticeable against the walls. This makes sense because vacuums typically do not reach against walls. So, dirt and dust that is deposited in open areas is vacuumed away with regular vacuuming. The second cause of filtration is simple air physics. We all know that heat rises. So, when a furnace is on the dusty dirt warms and floats upward. Then, when the system shuts off the dirt floats to cooler areas (usually against the walls). Over time it simply gets more and more embedded.

The real question is "what can be done about it?" Well, the answer depends on how much filtration exists and how long it has been there. The first step is to simply vacuum with an edging tool attached to a typical household vacuum cleaner. This will likely not do too much. The most you can hope for is a lighter look and affect. The next step is to spritz warm water onto the area (no soap!), agitate with a stiff brush (sweeping the brush in one direction typically is best because this will push the dust away from the wall rather than scrub it deeper within the carpet), and extract the wet dirt with a wet vacuum hose attachment on a wet vac. Should this not work then it is time to call a professional carpet cleaning service. Keep in mind though that not even a professional cleaning service can guarantee removal of filtration. They are, however, equipped with the necessary tools and solvents to do the best job possible.

Getting Cigarette Smoke Smells Out of Your Carpet

Having a carpet at home can really add a lot of class and personality to your home. It certainly helps improve the mood and atmosphere of any room you place it in. But while it can help make a room better, if it has unpleasant odor then it will surely do the exact opposite.

One of the problematic situations that many homeowners face is dealing with cigarette smoke smells from the carpet. If there are people who smoke cigarettes inside the home, its smell can get left behind on the carpet fiber causing quite an embarrassing situation particularly if you have visitors and guests over.

Getting rid of the cigarette smoke smells from your carpet can be a tall order but it certainly isn't impossible. If you want to learn how you can solve this carpet problem, just check out the simple and easy to follow guide below.

• The first thing that you will need to do is to gather the materials which we'll be using for this task. What you will need is some baking soda, an empty talcum or baby powder container, and a vacuum cleaner. The baking soda is great for removing unpleasant odor and will surely make your carpet smell clean once more. Once you have these on hand you can proceed and start getting rid of the cigarette odor on your carpet.

• Now, place some of the baking soda inside the empty powder container and go to the areas of the carpet where the cigarette smell is coming from. Sprinkle the area thoroughly with the baking soda using the container to evenly apply it to the carpet.

• Leave the baking soda on the carpet for 6 or more hours. The longer you leave it there the better. If you can afford to do so, leave it overnight for best results.

• The following morning, get your heavy duty vacuum cleaner and suck out the baking soda from the carpet. You will notice that the nasty cigarette odor will be gone and your carpet will now be smelling clean and fresh.

Roof Cleaning Products - What Should I Use to Clean My Roof and Why?

Roof cleaning products to remove black algae, moss, or fungus from your roof shingles are usually made with one of two active ingredients. In this article we will review the two different types of products most widely used by homeowners and contractors and the pros and cons of each.

The first roof cleaning product we will discuss is Chlorine Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) or lye (sodium hydroxide). This type of roof cleaning product is primarily used by professional roof cleaners due to the caustic nature of the active ingredient (sodium hypochlorite) as well as being the most economical chemical available. Industrial strength Chlorine Bleach is also a readily available product that can found at pool supply retailers which make it easy for contractors to purchase as needed.

PROS: Cheapest chemical available to use. Normally, no pressure needed when rinsing. Chlorine Bleach is readily available to purchase as needed from pool supply retailers.

CONS: This is a very harsh, dangerous chemical, and if used incorrectly could potentially stain, dry out or damage your shingles, remove the finish on aluminum gutters, stain painted surfaces, damage plants and grass, or create health hazards for your pets and children. Just a little bit of over spray while roof cleaning could be disastrous in so many ways. Chlorine bleach is not biodegradable and once it enters the ground it will always be there

Can chlorine bleach or chlorine bleach roof cleaning products be used without this kind of damage occurring? Yes, they can if you are extremely careful. The question you need to ask is when was the last time you did a home improvement project that worked out just the way you thought it would? No matter how careful you are, the chances that you may have over spray get on something else other than your shingles is pretty good. Just a little bit of wind can cause over spray to reach your yard or your neighbor's yard. Most homeowners are not willing to take that chance so they either hire a professional roof cleaner or use an alternative biodegradable and safe product that we will discuss next.

The second type of roof cleaning products are hydrogen peroxide based and use the active ingredient Sodium Percarbonate, the biodegradable and safe alternative to Chlorine Bleach. Used by both homeowners and professional roof cleaners who want a safe alternative to Chlorine Bleach that is effective in cleaning black algae stains, moss, or fungus from roof shingles.

PROS: This type of roof cleaning product takes the worry out of over spray and will not harm the finish on aluminum gutters, stain painted surfaces, damage plants and grass, or create health hazards for your pets and children. It allows for a biodegradable and safe way of accomplishing the same result. You can approach the cleaning process in two different ways with this type of roof cleaning product. You can spray it on and then use a pressure washer on a low pressure setting (as much as a hard rain) for instant results, or you can spray it on and let the rain rinse away the stains naturally over approximately 90 days. This type of flexibility in the application and rinse process is another reason why homeowners and contractors choose to use this type of biodegradable roof cleaning product.

CONS: Slightly more expensive than Chlorine Bleach. Green products normally cost more than caustic chemicals. In severe cases when using the natural rinse method you may need to reapply after 90 days to achieve your desired result.

Now that you have the facts about the type of roof cleaning products available you can make an informed decision in regards to what is best for you, your family, pets, and home.

Cleaning is an important and paramount exercise, be it at home, government office buildings or commercial premises. This is mainly to avoid instances of poor quality services or even risks of theft by staffs of fraudulent cleaning companies. In this regard, look out for the following qualities before selecting a house or commercial cleaning company.

1. Experience; The experience of the company in the industry is one of the most important qualities to look out for. This is because a company with a long experience in the cleaning industry offers the best services as the employees clearly understand the preferences of different clients and the work schedules involved. Long serving companies that offer commercial cleaning in Melbourne also have build good reputation among their clients because of the quality services they offer.

2. The Number of Clients: The number of clients served by the cleaning company is a good indicator of the quality of services offered by the company. This is because a company that offers a good and efficient service will always have a broader clientele base. The home owner should however be careful when considering this quality since it may end up becoming a disadvantage. Because of the large number of clients that are served by one company, the workers may fail to carefully attend to all the cleaning needs of every customer to perfection.

4. Legitimacy; Companies offering commercial cleaning services should by legally registered by the appropriate authorities. You need to verify this to avoid hiring fraudulent companies that may finally lead to theft of your assets.

5. Insurance; The cleaning company should be insured by a third party insurance to cover the client against any damage or loss of property. The employees should also be insured against any accidents that may occur while on duty. This is because some cleaning involves high heights and injuries are very likely.

6. Customer Support; A commercial or house cleaning company should have an efficient customer support staff in place to take care of any of the clients' issues round the clock, including customer complaints or inquiries. The house cleaning company's customer service panel should always be accessible by any client at any time during the working hours.

These are only but a few of the numerous qualities of good commercial cleaning service providers. The above parameters can hence be used by a potential client when evaluating the suitability of a house cleaning company before engaging their services.

Steam Cleaning Your Upholstery - Why a Professional Service Is Better

If you are like most people you are trying to get the most out of everything in these trying times. This includes the life of your furniture. Lucky for you, we live in the day of technology and with that come the advantage of being able to steam clean floors and upholstery. Steam cleaning not only expands the life of your furniture but it also has many other benefits such as removing bacteria that can grow without your even knowing.

There are many products out there that offer a way to do it yourself at home for a fraction of the cost. But if you do not read the manual and follow the instructions carefully you may actually do more harm than good to your furniture. For one thing, there is definitely an art to steam cleaning. A swift steady motion is needed to ensure that you do not over saturate an area. If this is not done correctly you will leave too much moisture on the furniture and actually create pockets that will over time foster the growth of mold and mildew. If your budget is tight you can do this at home yourself but doing a bit of research on the best steam cleaner will benefit you immensely. You can acquire information on various steam cleaner options online by reading reviews of products that others have used and benefitted from.

Of course the preferred method of steam cleaning comes from a professional. A professional steam cleaning service does this for a living. They are trained and understand how to use the equipment to achieve maximum results. Professional steamers also have a higher rate of steam offering your carpets an almost dry feel when the cleaning is completed, rather than wait several hours for the carpets to dry. They guarantee their service and this allows you to just sit back and enjoy the results. If there are any problems that develop you can call and have them rectify it, leaving you free from worry.

Professional steam cleaners also do the process from start to finish. For one the furniture must be vacuumed fully. This means cushions removed and all areas in between and beneath must be free from hair, dust and food particles. They also address any stains that may be found. A professional steam cleaner has dealt with almost any stain imaginable and has the products available to remove them or reduce the appearance to minimal.

With their expertise you will know that your furniture will not be harmed. Knowing how to remove the stains prior to the steam cleaning ensures you that the furniture will look its best when the job is done. These things may sound trivial but when you go to the trouble of having your furniture steam cleaned you want the results to be noticeable.

Carpet Cleaning - Why Should You Have It Done?

Carpet cleaning is one of those home maintenance tasks that should be performed at least twice per year. Carpets are known for their ability to store dirt, dust, allergens and bacteria for long periods of time. Even with regular vacuuming, it is impossible to get all of the debris that sinks deep into the carpet padding out of the carpet. Over time, carpet debris can contribute to allergic reactions, allergy problems and sinus or breathing problems. Enlisting the services of carpet cleaning is essential to getting all of the debris out of the carpet and padding.

Some people choose to rent a deep steam cleaner from their local hardware store to clean carpets. However, this does not offer the same benefits and power as professional carpet cleaning services. First, professionals are able to use chemicals that are safe for pets and children whereas the chemicals available with rental machines does not meet these standards. These machines are also used time and time again without regular maintenance which leads to the machine performing at a lesser level than it would if it was new. Carpet cleaning companies keep all of their tools and machines in tip top shape to ensure the best quality cleaning.

As a general consumer, chances are you do not really know the nitty gritty of carpet maintenance. The dirt, debris and allergens that are trapped in your carpet get that way because of regular foot traffic and because your carpet is lacking a protective coating. Professional companies will bring life back into your floors through their specific cleaning techniques which strip away all of the debris which has become caked on your carpet fibers and seeped into the padding below. Additionally, these companies will spray a protective coating over top of the carpet which will help it withstand use and abuse.

The minimum that you should have cleaning performed is twice per year. Most people choose to have their carpets cleaned at the change of every season or every three months. If you own a commercial property which sees a lot of foot traffic then it is ideal to have carpet cleaning performed every month. Even low grade commercial carpet should be cleaned professionally on a regular basis to help maintain its durability and integrity. Carpet cleaning services are also ideal for outdoor carpet which can be subject to weather elements which deposit bacteria and moisture deep into the fabrics which can lead to mold or mildew.

Making Time To Get Rid Of Clutter

How much time is 15 minutes? I'm willing to bet that most of us would say, "Not much". Would many people say that it is enough time to get rid of clutter? It's less than the typical TV show, even with advertising taken out of it. It's less time than we spend at lunch during a typical day. So, what can we do with 15 minutes? A lot!

What we want to do is take 15 minutes (or whatever left over amount of time you have available) and turn it into a powerful decluttering tool. If you have 30 minutes, 10 minutes, or even only 5 minutes available, using it correctly can lead to huge results in your decluttering efforts.

As I mention again and again, getting started is the first step. Let's take the case of the person that has 5 free minutes. Sitting down and planning out a decluttering schedule probably isn't the right thing to do in this case - for that matter, it really isn't the right thing to do with less than about an hour of time. So, what do we do instead? We start getting rid of clutter! For a 5 minute decluttering job pick one small area and go to work. For example, if you have 5 minutes before heading to work or heading out to run errands, pick a counter or a table top. Clear off all the items that do not permanently belong and sort these out. Throw away the trash, put the mail in the mail box or file folder, and either deal with the extra clutter right away if time permits, or put it in a box to deal with during your next quick decluttering. Voila! You now have a clean surface instead of a cluttered up area.

You can extend this idea to larger areas, or more heavily cluttered areas by using more time. If you have 15 or more minutes, you could tackle a portion of a room. Say you have 20 minutes during lunch, this would be the perfect time to pick up the entryway, sort out any clothes (jackets, hats, etc) that are laying around, get shoes put away, and sweep or vacuum out the area. While you are picking up the clothing, see if there is anything that has been laying around unused - perhaps it is time to get rid of some clothing clutter and make a donation to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Just using these small bits of time that we have available can start to make big differences. Even once a week these quick decluttering jobs will make visible changes in your life. Consider what happens when we do this 2,3, or 4 times a week. What was a quick job to clean a counter turns into a clutter free area which then turns into a clutter free home! This is a huge help to ourselves and our life - adding these small decluttering opportunities together can result in large changes. Ready to start?

Grab a small piece of paper or a notecard. Keep it somewhere visible and write down when you do any of these little decluttering jobs. Write down how long it took and what you did. Aim for doing this at least twice per week. Seeing what you have done and the results around you can be a tremendous help. If you want to go the extra mile, take a picture (before and after) as a reminder of what can be accomplished with this spare moments.

Keep up the decluttering!

What You Want to Know About Carpet Cleaning Companies

Carpet cleaning can give you a lot of trouble. There are times when you just don't feel like doing all this hard work. But there is a simple answer; you can ask the specialized companies to do that for you. Now you can relax and let them clean the carpets in the most professional way.

If you want the best from your carpet cleaning company, you should know some things about what they do. And what is the easiest way to find out what they are really about? Ask them some questions.

We will give some of the most important things you have to find out from them in order to get a well done job.

The first thing that would come into everyone's mind is regarded to the method they use.

There are lots of methods that companies use, so you'll need to find out which one of them they use. Think about what kind of method will suit you best.

One of the methods used these days with a high efficiency is the one based one hot water with high pressure. This way, the water gets out all the dirt from the carpet by sucking it. The drying time takes several hours.

Another question that really makes the difference is the money.

You have some money put aside for this service, but what will you do if they ask for more? Low prices aren't always the best option; they may be low for a reason that is not convenient for you.

My advice would be to not go for the cheapest company. They will probably provide a service that will not satisfy you and your money will go to waste.

Extra money sometime means extra quality.

Another big issue that needs to be clarified regards the period of time in which they provide their services.

Experience is a vital factor. Experienced staff will know exactly what to do in order to get your carpet cleaned in a short time, those who have no experience or few experience might do some mistakes or might take a longer time to get the job done.

Certifications are really important when you want to call a specialized service. This thing shows that they are careful with the clients and that they care about the image that they have. It is a sign of professionalism.

If you are thinking about how often you should do the cleaning, just ask them. They have the right expertise to tell you how many times you should clean your carpets over a year.

The Use Of Steam Cleaners For Healthy Living

To be healthy is an essential aspect of ones life. Be it in the food we eat or the way we live. To live in a fresh and pleasant atmosphere makes one to be healthy. Even the best methods we use for cleaning will not get rid of grease or embedded dirt. A steam cleaner is the best solution to having a clean and healthy home. It can access areas that cannot be cleaned by conventional methods.

The operating principle of the steam cleaner is quite straightforward. Water, when heated to a high temperature, becomes steam. The vapour is extremely hot and is as high as 200 degrees F. This steam, along with the associated heat, makes it possible to clean each and every corner of one's home. Wet steam and dry steam make the two elements of steam. The wet steam loosens the link between the dirt and stains with the various surfaces to which dirt adheres. Every hole or crevice can be cleaned and sanitized with the vapor. By the action of dry steam on easily accessible surfaces, the dirt or oil can be wiped off.

One of the greatest advantages of steam cleaning is that it uses no chemicals. It is water converted to steam that does the cleaning. The whole operation, not only cleans but deodorizes at the same time. Steam cleaning is the best alternative in keeping ones home clean. This is especially true when there are small children or people who are allergic to chemicals.

Steam cleaning also has another significant benefit. It can rid ones home of pests and rodents and that too without having to use any pesticide. As the hot steam enters every nook or crevice in ones home, it kills germs, dust mites, mold spores, viruses and bacteria. It is, therefore, possible to sanitize ones entire home. It is also beneficial in homes where a person or child has had some form of infection.

A steam cleaner is an indispensable addition to ones home. It would mean that along with having a clean home, one would also be rid of any pests or viruses. One would be able to live in a totally healthy atmosphere. The water vapour sanitizes ones living spaces without the use of any chemical means. The use of chemical based cleaners is risky. We are, therefore, spared the risks that are often associated with its use.

Tips For Preventing Mold Growth In Your Home

While mold do not generally pose a considerable health risk when you are outdoors, the story is different when you are indoors. This is due to the fact that excessive moisture can accumulate indoors, and molds grow rapidly in the presence of moisture. It is therefore necessary to be extra careful regarding the conditions that can encourage mold growth inside your home. If in any case you suspect that mold is beginning to invade your home, you can do the following preliminary actions to help in exterminating its presence:

1. Determine and Eliminate All Source of Moisture

Molds can only grow in the presence of moisture, so the most important factor to consider in the fight against its growth is the source of moisture inside your home. Leaky pipes, humidity, and condensation; all of these contributes to moisture inside your home. So before it gets out of control, immediately fix any water problem or leak. Another way is to prevent humidity by venting bathrooms and dryers outside. The use of exhaust fans while cooking, dishwashing and cleaning can also help to reduce the level of humidity. Increasing ventilation, as well as using air-conditioning and de-humidifying systems also helps get rid of too much humidity. You can also prevent condensation by using insulation for windows, pipes, exterior walls, roof, and floors.

2. Immediately Clean Up Mold from the Affected Area

You can control mold growth while it has not yet reached a level that can adversely affect the health of your family. But before doing the clean up, make sure to protect yourself with the following: a N-95 respirator, which prevents you from inhaling airborne mold; gloves, which prevents the risk of touching molds with your bare hands; goggles without ventilation holes, which protects your eyes from getting infested with molds. When you are done protecting yourself and are ready for the clean-up, you can start by scrubbing mold off hard surfaces with soap and water. Remember to completely dry the area after cleaning it up. Areas that are always damp, such as the bathroom, will be difficult to make completely free from molds. Cleaning it up more often, increasing ventilation and opening a window will help to at least minimize the presence of molds.

The procedures above can only help to deal with a minimal amount of molds There are instances where more advanced technique will be needed to completely eliminate the problem of mold growth.

Maid Service: Have A Clean And Fresh Home

Steps to Remove Toothpaste on the Carpet

Brushing our teeth is very important if we want to have a nice, sparkling smile that we can show to everybody. Toothpaste plays a very important role in getting our teeth clean and white as well as eliminating germs and bacteria which can make our breath smell bad.

But while toothpaste has a lot of benefits when it comes to dental hygiene, it can be a source of trouble if you accidentally get some of it onto the carpet. Toothpaste and your carpet doesn't exactly mix well as this can cause a nasty stain that will be tough to remove. If you have accidentally spilled some toothpaste on your carpet, here are some of the simple steps that you can use to help get rid of this problem.

• First, you'll need to remove the toothpaste, or at least as much of it as possible, from the carpet. To do this, you should get a dull knife or a spoon and start scraping off the toothpaste on the carpet. You should be careful not to cut the carpet fibers accidentally though. Once you have removed as much of the toothpaste as you can, move on to the next step.

• Next, get some white vinegar and some water. Mix one part of the former with four parts of the latter. If you notice later on that the vinegar cleaning solution is not that strong, you can adjust the ratio to one part vinegar to three parts water. Mix this inside a container and then apply some of it onto the toothpaste stain on the carpet.

• After you have applied the cleaning solution onto the stained area of the carpet, let it soak first for a moment or two. Then, get a clean white cloth and start blotting the toothpaste stain. This will help transfer the stain from the carpet and to the cloth. Continue doing this while occasionally applying more cleaning solution if needed. Do this until the entire stain is gone.

• The last step is equally important in taking care of your carpet. You have to rinse the area you just finished cleaning with some water and then dry up the area using some clean towels. Doing this is important because you don't want any cleaning solution residue from getting left behind and causing a build-up over time.

Toothpaste on the carpet can be a very tough problem but hopefully these steps will help you solve it in a jiffy. Good luck and happy cleaning.

Carpet Cleaning - The Options

When furnishing your home or business, carpeting is one of the hardest decisions you will have to make and having made that decision you want to ensure that your carpet is well cared for. With the correct care and attention the longevity of the carpet can be dramatically increased. Therefore it is equally important that you make the right decision about how to clean it. Let us look at some carpet cleaning methods:

Vacuum cleaning.

Although it is considered good practice to regularly vacuum your carpet, this will only clean a fraction of the surface dirt. The particles of dirt and grit that are left behind may cause irreparable damage, as they tear through the carpet fibres.

Bonnet cleaning.

With this method the carpet is preconditioned with a spray that dries to a powder. When the dirt has loosened a rotary machine agitates the carpet fibres with a cotton pad. This is a very quick method but it can only clean the surface of the carpet and friction generated by the machine may damage certain types of carpet

Dry extraction.

A brush is used to work a dry mixture of both solvent and detergent into the carpet. Once the dirt has loosened, it is removed by suction. This method is not very efficient at cleaning heavily or deeply soiled carpets. Its main advantage is that the room can be used almost immediately. This could be very useful in a school or office

Hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning).

Although there are variations to this method, typically, an alkali pre -spray will be applied to the surface of the carpet. After a sufficient 'dwell' time, this solution is brushed into the pile, loosening the dirt and particles in the fibres. The actual 'hot water extraction' machine, is essentially a powerful pump and vacuum. An acidic rinsing agent, flushes the carpet of debris and lowers the ph, reducing the risk of colour bleeding and 'browning', stain's caused by certain carpet backings (such as jute). The final process involves passing the machine's wand over the carpet, extracting as much of the moisture as possible.

Although it can take a few hours for the carpet to dry, depending on carpet type and fibre, the results are often exceptional. One look in the recovery tank will show a sludge rich mixture; these are the very particles of grit and dirt that are causing potential damage to your prized carpet.

Getting your carpet cleaned by a fully trained professional is always the best and safest solution. Amateur carpet cleaning is often a hazard, your carpet texture could be ruined, or worse it could shrink.

Dust Matters

Dust is everywhere, literally. In our homes, on the roads, in the market places, the offices, the parks and the parking lots: you name it and you will find it. Nothing is free from dust. Everything is laden with it - the computer, the kitchen ware and home appliances, the furniture and the wall hangings, the decorative pieces and the book shelves. Dust is not a monopoly of the East; it has its niche in the West too, though not as rampant and obvious. Indeed, dust is not limited to our home planet, but is prevalent in our planetary neighbors, comets, meteorites, stellar cousins from outer space and in inter-galactic spaces too as cosmic dust - the starry equivalent of our earthy material. After air, it is the most ubiquitous composite matter on earth, sometimes hardly distinguishable from it.

Dust in residential areas is constantly whipped up by wind and human activity. It rises and settles all the time and while air-borne travels from house to house. It is made up of skin flakes, fabric fibers, flour and food dust from mixers and grinders. It comes from cleaning, sweeping, cooking and, of course, dusting. All this is home-made; there is also dust coming in from the outside such as dust from the street raised by flowing traffic, the blowing winds carrying industrial pollutants, the things purchased from the shops and of course people walking in. Once inside the house, it finds several things to settle on: carpets, furniture, shelves, window sills and the walls and ceilings. Fluffs of dust gather into dust bunnies in little-used corners, under the beds, embedded in seat cushions and pillows, on top of shelves and cupboards and certainly in the attic space.

Coping with dust is not a simple task since we are chasing a moving target. Dusting whips it up and spreads it, exposing ourselves and other things around the place for it to settle down again. Vacuuming is a limited, effort-driven, energy-sapping activity that leaves us drained, even while leaving the unreachable places as dust repositories. Closing the doors and windows and shutting yourself in is not an option either, since it cuts off air flow and the dust that is already in is sure to get to you sooner than you think. One cannot leave them open either, since with the air flow more dust comes in and the bunnies start to appear more frequently and in copious quantities. Floor mopping, carpet cleaning, wiping furniture and keeping kitchen waste from flying are some of the measures we take, in addition to the afore-mentioned activities, but dusting remains a losing battle. Most of our energy is spent in keeping the house dust-free, which is of course an ideal state. It is a myth to expect a place to be completely free from dust, since dust gathers faster than you can clean it, always. And professional dust busting sucks you dry; it cuts your purse strings and leaves you to cope with it again after it is done. With dust, nothing is over.

Nothing is more shocking to watch than sunlight shimmering through a crack in the door or a window pane: it is a revelation to know that the tiny insect-like particles dancing in its path are the dust that we are breathing right now. You blow at them and watch them with fascination as they scatter and re-group again to continue their dreadful dance. Obviously, they are all over the place. What are these particles? Is there anything in the world that is more vulnerable and tenacious at the same time than these little things that have made our life miserable? We have gained control over nature, mastered the laws of science, invented ways to probe the depths of oceans and outer space, invaded the far corners of the earth and extended our scale of study from the very minute to the mammoth objects in the universe; yet, we have failed to contain this menace from these tiny particles that have a tyrannical hold over us. There is no conquering them; there is no getting rid of them; there is indeed no living without them, no matter what havoc they unleash on us.

Dust particles are waste matter. As we chuck our fluid waste into the sea, so we let loose our solid waste matter into the air. Nothing ever goes away for good; no matter where we throw it, it comes back to us. Ash, burnt tire rubber, dandruff, kitchen waste, decaying matter (leaves and flowers), soiled shoes, broken cobwebs, abrasions from skin (human and animal), rock (erosion) and metals (rust), industrial waste as air-borne pollutants, human and animal hair, textile and paper fibers, minerals from the soil and a host of other materials that are typical to a particular surroundings. So we see that dust is composed of organic matter as much as chemicals and other natural stuff that has been thrown away as waste.

This floating waste dump is a mobile breeding ground for germs and a hanger for harmful chemicals which pose a perpetual health risk to us. Not only the industrial environs, but even household dust contains hazardous chemicals, as reported by some pollution and health study groups around the world. No wonder, then, illnesses like asthma, allergic reactions, hay fever and endemic flues dog our lives in no small measure. Dust, the all-pervading ever-present dust, is not only teeming with life, but also with life-threatening stuff.

There are two ways to deal with this fluffy material universe we live in:

• Go at it with a missionary zeal, eradicate it from your life by preparing a strategy to minimize, if not eliminate, it from your life and follow it up scrupulously.

• Take it easy. Consider it chic to have dust around. Stop dusting your bookshelves. Let it accumulate on your possessions - it adds a protective coat of gray matter that shields the surface underneath from scratches. As a newspaper columnist put it rather flippantly - "No more need to take up the broom, brush, duster or vacuum cleaner to fight a losing battle. Just welcome it as your boon companion and relax!"
