Tips For Preventing Mold Growth In Your Home

While mold do not generally pose a considerable health risk when you are outdoors, the story is different when you are indoors. This is due to the fact that excessive moisture can accumulate indoors, and molds grow rapidly in the presence of moisture. It is therefore necessary to be extra careful regarding the conditions that can encourage mold growth inside your home. If in any case you suspect that mold is beginning to invade your home, you can do the following preliminary actions to help in exterminating its presence:

1. Determine and Eliminate All Source of Moisture

Molds can only grow in the presence of moisture, so the most important factor to consider in the fight against its growth is the source of moisture inside your home. Leaky pipes, humidity, and condensation; all of these contributes to moisture inside your home. So before it gets out of control, immediately fix any water problem or leak. Another way is to prevent humidity by venting bathrooms and dryers outside. The use of exhaust fans while cooking, dishwashing and cleaning can also help to reduce the level of humidity. Increasing ventilation, as well as using air-conditioning and de-humidifying systems also helps get rid of too much humidity. You can also prevent condensation by using insulation for windows, pipes, exterior walls, roof, and floors.

2. Immediately Clean Up Mold from the Affected Area

You can control mold growth while it has not yet reached a level that can adversely affect the health of your family. But before doing the clean up, make sure to protect yourself with the following: a N-95 respirator, which prevents you from inhaling airborne mold; gloves, which prevents the risk of touching molds with your bare hands; goggles without ventilation holes, which protects your eyes from getting infested with molds. When you are done protecting yourself and are ready for the clean-up, you can start by scrubbing mold off hard surfaces with soap and water. Remember to completely dry the area after cleaning it up. Areas that are always damp, such as the bathroom, will be difficult to make completely free from molds. Cleaning it up more often, increasing ventilation and opening a window will help to at least minimize the presence of molds.

The procedures above can only help to deal with a minimal amount of molds There are instances where more advanced technique will be needed to completely eliminate the problem of mold growth.

Steps to Remove Toothpaste on the Carpet

Brushing our teeth is very important if we want to have a nice, sparkling smile that we can show to everybody. Toothpaste plays a very important role in getting our teeth clean and white as well as eliminating germs and bacteria which can make our breath smell bad.

But while toothpaste has a lot of benefits when it comes to dental hygiene, it can be a source of trouble if you accidentally get some of it onto the carpet. Toothpaste and your carpet doesn't exactly mix well as this can cause a nasty stain that will be tough to remove. If you have accidentally spilled some toothpaste on your carpet, here are some of the simple steps that you can use to help get rid of this problem.

• First, you'll need to remove the toothpaste, or at least as much of it as possible, from the carpet. To do this, you should get a dull knife or a spoon and start scraping off the toothpaste on the carpet. You should be careful not to cut the carpet fibers accidentally though. Once you have removed as much of the toothpaste as you can, move on to the next step.

• Next, get some white vinegar and some water. Mix one part of the former with four parts of the latter. If you notice later on that the vinegar cleaning solution is not that strong, you can adjust the ratio to one part vinegar to three parts water. Mix this inside a container and then apply some of it onto the toothpaste stain on the carpet.

• After you have applied the cleaning solution onto the stained area of the carpet, let it soak first for a moment or two. Then, get a clean white cloth and start blotting the toothpaste stain. This will help transfer the stain from the carpet and to the cloth. Continue doing this while occasionally applying more cleaning solution if needed. Do this until the entire stain is gone.

• The last step is equally important in taking care of your carpet. You have to rinse the area you just finished cleaning with some water and then dry up the area using some clean towels. Doing this is important because you don't want any cleaning solution residue from getting left behind and causing a build-up over time.

Toothpaste on the carpet can be a very tough problem but hopefully these steps will help you solve it in a jiffy. Good luck and happy cleaning.

Carpet Cleaning - The Options

When furnishing your home or business, carpeting is one of the hardest decisions you will have to make and having made that decision you want to ensure that your carpet is well cared for. With the correct care and attention the longevity of the carpet can be dramatically increased. Therefore it is equally important that you make the right decision about how to clean it. Let us look at some carpet cleaning methods:

Vacuum cleaning.

Although it is considered good practice to regularly vacuum your carpet, this will only clean a fraction of the surface dirt. The particles of dirt and grit that are left behind may cause irreparable damage, as they tear through the carpet fibres.

Bonnet cleaning.

With this method the carpet is preconditioned with a spray that dries to a powder. When the dirt has loosened a rotary machine agitates the carpet fibres with a cotton pad. This is a very quick method but it can only clean the surface of the carpet and friction generated by the machine may damage certain types of carpet

Dry extraction.

A brush is used to work a dry mixture of both solvent and detergent into the carpet. Once the dirt has loosened, it is removed by suction. This method is not very efficient at cleaning heavily or deeply soiled carpets. Its main advantage is that the room can be used almost immediately. This could be very useful in a school or office

Hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning).

Although there are variations to this method, typically, an alkali pre -spray will be applied to the surface of the carpet. After a sufficient 'dwell' time, this solution is brushed into the pile, loosening the dirt and particles in the fibres. The actual 'hot water extraction' machine, is essentially a powerful pump and vacuum. An acidic rinsing agent, flushes the carpet of debris and lowers the ph, reducing the risk of colour bleeding and 'browning', stain's caused by certain carpet backings (such as jute). The final process involves passing the machine's wand over the carpet, extracting as much of the moisture as possible.

Although it can take a few hours for the carpet to dry, depending on carpet type and fibre, the results are often exceptional. One look in the recovery tank will show a sludge rich mixture; these are the very particles of grit and dirt that are causing potential damage to your prized carpet.

Getting your carpet cleaned by a fully trained professional is always the best and safest solution. Amateur carpet cleaning is often a hazard, your carpet texture could be ruined, or worse it could shrink.

Dust Matters

Dust is everywhere, literally. In our homes, on the roads, in the market places, the offices, the parks and the parking lots: you name it and you will find it. Nothing is free from dust. Everything is laden with it - the computer, the kitchen ware and home appliances, the furniture and the wall hangings, the decorative pieces and the book shelves. Dust is not a monopoly of the East; it has its niche in the West too, though not as rampant and obvious. Indeed, dust is not limited to our home planet, but is prevalent in our planetary neighbors, comets, meteorites, stellar cousins from outer space and in inter-galactic spaces too as cosmic dust - the starry equivalent of our earthy material. After air, it is the most ubiquitous composite matter on earth, sometimes hardly distinguishable from it.

Dust in residential areas is constantly whipped up by wind and human activity. It rises and settles all the time and while air-borne travels from house to house. It is made up of skin flakes, fabric fibers, flour and food dust from mixers and grinders. It comes from cleaning, sweeping, cooking and, of course, dusting. All this is home-made; there is also dust coming in from the outside such as dust from the street raised by flowing traffic, the blowing winds carrying industrial pollutants, the things purchased from the shops and of course people walking in. Once inside the house, it finds several things to settle on: carpets, furniture, shelves, window sills and the walls and ceilings. Fluffs of dust gather into dust bunnies in little-used corners, under the beds, embedded in seat cushions and pillows, on top of shelves and cupboards and certainly in the attic space.

Coping with dust is not a simple task since we are chasing a moving target. Dusting whips it up and spreads it, exposing ourselves and other things around the place for it to settle down again. Vacuuming is a limited, effort-driven, energy-sapping activity that leaves us drained, even while leaving the unreachable places as dust repositories. Closing the doors and windows and shutting yourself in is not an option either, since it cuts off air flow and the dust that is already in is sure to get to you sooner than you think. One cannot leave them open either, since with the air flow more dust comes in and the bunnies start to appear more frequently and in copious quantities. Floor mopping, carpet cleaning, wiping furniture and keeping kitchen waste from flying are some of the measures we take, in addition to the afore-mentioned activities, but dusting remains a losing battle. Most of our energy is spent in keeping the house dust-free, which is of course an ideal state. It is a myth to expect a place to be completely free from dust, since dust gathers faster than you can clean it, always. And professional dust busting sucks you dry; it cuts your purse strings and leaves you to cope with it again after it is done. With dust, nothing is over.

Nothing is more shocking to watch than sunlight shimmering through a crack in the door or a window pane: it is a revelation to know that the tiny insect-like particles dancing in its path are the dust that we are breathing right now. You blow at them and watch them with fascination as they scatter and re-group again to continue their dreadful dance. Obviously, they are all over the place. What are these particles? Is there anything in the world that is more vulnerable and tenacious at the same time than these little things that have made our life miserable? We have gained control over nature, mastered the laws of science, invented ways to probe the depths of oceans and outer space, invaded the far corners of the earth and extended our scale of study from the very minute to the mammoth objects in the universe; yet, we have failed to contain this menace from these tiny particles that have a tyrannical hold over us. There is no conquering them; there is no getting rid of them; there is indeed no living without them, no matter what havoc they unleash on us.

Dust particles are waste matter. As we chuck our fluid waste into the sea, so we let loose our solid waste matter into the air. Nothing ever goes away for good; no matter where we throw it, it comes back to us. Ash, burnt tire rubber, dandruff, kitchen waste, decaying matter (leaves and flowers), soiled shoes, broken cobwebs, abrasions from skin (human and animal), rock (erosion) and metals (rust), industrial waste as air-borne pollutants, human and animal hair, textile and paper fibers, minerals from the soil and a host of other materials that are typical to a particular surroundings. So we see that dust is composed of organic matter as much as chemicals and other natural stuff that has been thrown away as waste.

This floating waste dump is a mobile breeding ground for germs and a hanger for harmful chemicals which pose a perpetual health risk to us. Not only the industrial environs, but even household dust contains hazardous chemicals, as reported by some pollution and health study groups around the world. No wonder, then, illnesses like asthma, allergic reactions, hay fever and endemic flues dog our lives in no small measure. Dust, the all-pervading ever-present dust, is not only teeming with life, but also with life-threatening stuff.

There are two ways to deal with this fluffy material universe we live in:

• Go at it with a missionary zeal, eradicate it from your life by preparing a strategy to minimize, if not eliminate, it from your life and follow it up scrupulously.

• Take it easy. Consider it chic to have dust around. Stop dusting your bookshelves. Let it accumulate on your possessions - it adds a protective coat of gray matter that shields the surface underneath from scratches. As a newspaper columnist put it rather flippantly - "No more need to take up the broom, brush, duster or vacuum cleaner to fight a losing battle. Just welcome it as your boon companion and relax!"

Cutting Clutter With Furniture Storage

Hopefully your furniture isn't part of your clutter - in fact, it can be part of the solution. By making smart choices when selecting new furniture, or by making changes to existing furniture, we can help cut our clutter by adding storage space in an otherwise unused area.

One of the best choices we can make with regards to furniture is to get a bed that has storage space underneath it. There are several methods we can use depending on whether or not we are getting new furniture or making changes to an existing setup.

If buying new, look for beds that have multiple drawers underneath. Utilizing multiple drawers will keep you from using one big drawer as a catch all for random clothes and other nick nacks laying around. Remember - we want to keep it organized and serving a purpose, not filling up with clutter.

If you are not in the market for a new bed but can purchase a new frame, look for a frame that would fit your existing mattress and springs. Many time these can be purchased fairly economically and come in a range of styles and drawer configurations.

Take a look at your local market place; search on Craigslist or other online options for used frames with drawers. This can reduce the cost from buying new and save money on delivery.

Do you have access to a shop or someone that can make a drawer system for you? The raw materials for a project like this is not very expensive and can save a lot of money compared to buying new. A quick search on Google for "build your own bedframe with drawers" shows many results that give instructions on how to do this.

Remember that the idea is to give ourselves more storage space and options for reducing clutter; we do not want this to turn into a clutter collection point! Use this space to keep piles of clothing from forming around your bed, use extra space in the drawers for items that are frequently needed but only when in or going to bed.

This idea of dual use furniture can apply in other areas as well. Do you use footstool or coffee tables? Both of these can be had with extra storage. Footstools that act as a chest can be easily found and coffee tables with drawers or an opening top are also common. Utilizing these can give you space for organization and clutter reduction that otherwise wouldn't exist in your home. Try giving these a shot and enjoy the reduced clutter in your house!

Cleaning Cheese Spread on Your Carpet

Cheese spread is very delicious and works great with a number of different foods. You can make it into a sandwich or you can turn it into a cheese dip. However way you want to consume this great snack companion, it will surely help improve any food that you eat it with.

Sometimes though miscues can happen and while you are preparing a sandwich in the living room you could end up spilling a lot of cheese spread on the carpet. This can be a tough carpet cleaning problem for any homeowner. The cheese spread leaves behind a nasty yellow stain that will be very hard to remove thus your carpet's look and appearance could be ruined.

Cheese spread stains may be hard difficult but it certainly isn't impossible. If you have this problem at home, just refer to the easy-to-follow guide below to help you in solving this cleaning problem.

First, you will need to remove as much of the cheese spread as you can on the carpet. To do this, you will need to use a dull knife and carefully scoop the cheese spread to remove it. Do this carefully though as you can end up actually making the spill worse if you spread it to other parts of the carpet. Certainly this is the last thing that you would want to do when cleaning up this spill.

After you have cleared the carpet of the excess cheese spread, you will next need to address the yellow stain that is left behind. To help clean it and remove it from the carpet you must make a homemade cleaning solution by using a teaspoon of ammonia and mixing it with a cup of warm water. Place this mixture inside a spray bottle or a container and then apply some of it onto the stained area on the carpet.

Now, you will need to let the stain soak in the ammonia cleaning solution for about five minutes. Then, use a clean white cloth to blot the affected area. Do this continuously until the stain is gone. It won't be removed easily but after several attempts you can get rid of the cheese spread stain on your carpet completely.

For the final step, rinse the part of the carpet where the stain used to be. Then, get some clean rags or towels and dry the portion completely before you can start using it again.

Things You Must Look For When Shopping For Carpet Cleaning Machines

Whether you are shopping for a carpet cleaning machine or a pair of office shoes, you need to take your time. Always be patient with your decision and do not do your shopping in a hurry. Know the product you are about to spend your money on, explore the best options and research for the best ones in the market. When shopping for carpet cleaning machines, if you pay a little attention to some little things, you can purchase something that is truly worth your money.

First of all, you need to know your budget before jumping in a pool of fancy looking carpet cleaning machines. Spending around between $500 and $1,000 is enough for anyone to buy a machine that is packed with all the latest features. Surely, there are machines that are more costly, but your purchase should only be based on you requirements. After you have decided the budget, look for reviews on some of the top brands out there and then limit your search within those brands only.

The size of your carpet machine is important depending on the size of area that you will be cleaning. Furthermore, you need to look at the pressure of your carpet cleaning machine. Remember, you want to reach to the bottom of your carpet for cleaning the embedded dirt and grits but at the same time, you don't want to apply so much pressure that they get embedded even deeper making your job difficult. Make sure that you select one of those carpet cleaning machines that have a powerful motor to provide you with the required amount of pressure.

The size of cord and hose is the most important thing, because if you will be working on a large carpet, you won't want to keep moving the machine to find an electric board in every corner to plug in your machine. The lesser the movement of your machine, the easier the job will be for you. So, while you are looking through carpet cleaning machines, make sure you go for the biggest hose and cord size. Another factor is the tank size; bigger the tank, lesser the number of refills. However, a larger tank makes your machine heavier and bulky. In this case, do consider your requirements too. Do not choose a machine with tank larger than what you actually require.

Some carpet cleaning machines come with bonus items. Since the competition is tough in the market, every company wants to do something to attract more customers. Before finalizing your transaction at a shop, look at the extra items you are getting with your machine. An upholstery tool can be a great addition. Finally, make sure that you get moving brushes with your carpet cleaning unit. The number of brushes is another important point. Get higher number of brushes and preferably the moving ones to make your life easier.

What to Know About Tile and Grout Cleaning

Tile is one of the most used materials for flooring and walls in mudrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. While this durable flooring material creates a beautiful look, it can become dingy looking over time as the grout absorbs dirt and bacteria from foot traffic. Many people are familiar with the age old method of tile and grout cleaning involving hours of hard labor while on your hands and knees with a toothbrush, however this is no more. Tile and grout cleaning service companies are the answer to your prayers with affordable services which give outstanding results.

While there are many versions of grout cleaner available at your local home improvement store, none of them offer the same power as professional grade cleaners. The special chemicals that are used by tile and grout cleaning companies are formulated to get even the deepest stains out of tile and grout. You can hire professionals to clean any type of tile or grout in any room of your home. Specifically, a deep steam clean extraction machine will be used to push out and suck up any dirt that is trapped in the pores of the grout. This process is essential to bringing the look of your tile grout back to life. Tile and grout cleaning service companies will then seal the grout to help prevent future stains.

Choosing the right tile and grout cleaning company is important. You can start by asking your family and friends if they have specific referrals for businesses in the area. It is also beneficial to consult online review websites to find out more information from non-biased customers who have also used the services of the companies you are considering. Contact the company to find out what kind of services they offer. If you have children or pets then you will want to choose a company which offers non-toxic cleaners as they will be safer for your animals. You should also ask if the company offers any type of grout replacement plan or resealing option. Sealing your grout will help protect it from wearing down due to floor cleaners, moisture and general abuse from people walking on it. Grout cleaning is less important for home maintenance than other forms of cleaning. Generally you only need to call upon a professional for tile and grout cleaning once per year. If the grout is then sealed it will make future cleaning easier and more affordable.

Finding a Great Home Cleaning Service

Understand that everyone needs a little help from time to time. Whether you're one of those people who has always cleaned up on your own, or someone that consistently uses a home cleaning service, it is a job that always needs done. One of the first steps for those who are new to hiring outside help is to ask around to friends and family about their recommendations.

The second thing that you should do when looking for a home cleaning service is to call the companies that you're interested in. There are a few key questions you will want to ask. First of which, find out how long this company has been doing business. If it is a franchise, you may be in a better situation than hiring an independent purely by virtue of existing protections and policies being in place. You might also find out if they are licensed and bonded. Another question to ask is if there is a set schedule or if this is something that is just an estimated time frame.

When researching the various companies after you've called, your next step will be to look them up on the Better Business Bureau website to find out if they have any complaints filed against them. Remember, you are hiring someone to come into your home and clean, so you need to be proactive in finding out if there are any concerns, and further, how those concerns were handled.

Insurance is also very important. Hiring a company that insures their employees is key because if he or she is injured while in your home, you may have some issues that you are responsible for. These costs are not only out of pocket or your own expense, but can often times impact your homeowners' insurance.

Screened, bonded, insured and licensed are all things you will want to look for. When you are asking, ask about each of those things. You'll want to be assured that each person who will be in your home has been adequately checked for criminal history, and also you'll want to know should a theft occur, you'll be protected. It is also very important to make sure that the company hires its own people. Some companies will hire contractors and otherwise but this is not always the safest way. The best way to be as careful as possible is to be sure that these are all checked employees of the company itself.

Lastly, when you are hiring a home cleaning service you might want to ask about the services they provide and the equipment or supplies they may need. There are a variety of ways that you can lower costs and if they do use your supplies this may mean less cost on their end and more money in your pocket. However if you want them to use their own supplies, this is fine, too. Neither is a sign of any kind of issue, it is just a matter of personal preference. If you do meet the person who is cleaning your home and you do not feel comfortable with them -- don't hire them. Let the company know how you feel and be sure to express your concerns.

How to Look After Your Rug at Home

Unfortunately, rugs are not a self-sustaining investment. In order to keep them beautiful and elegant, they require a little work to keep them healthy and vibrant. There are several things for you to consider in order to extend a rug's life for as long as possible.

Maintenance At Home

To begin with, you should rotate your rugs on a set schedule. You'll want to even out the wear, so make sure it is rotated equally, especially if your rug is in a high traffic area where people are walking all the time. Also, too much sunlight on one spot can make the colour fade in one spot on your rug. Heaters and fireplaces can affect it too so ensure you rotate for this reason too.

Next, you'll want to vacuum regularly. Vacuums can help to lift off and extract the lighter dirt and dust that's stuck in your rug. This allows for a cleaner surface for you to enjoy in your home.

If your rug isn't a big thick shag then you should definitely use a power head vacuum in order to get as much dust out as possible. If it is a big shag then a power head will just get tangle in the vacuum

Remember when vacuuming that just because the vacuum went over the carpet doesn't mean that it is properly vacuumed. You should go as slowly as you can, giving the dirt time to be sucked up.

For spots and stains, try pouring a little water over the stain and blot it with a towel before resorting to any chemicals. Some of these chemicals can harm your rug if used incorrectly. This is best done as soon there has been a spill in order to suck up as much of it as possible. If you can leave a dry towel on the spill afterwards and place something heavy on it overnight you can get the best results.

Please be careful as dyes in the rug can bleed! It might be better to take it to be cleaned at this point

Taking Your Rug to the Professionals

Last step, and it is an important one. Make sure it gets the proper cleaning and maintenance it needs from a professional cleaner. Don't just get any old carpet cleaner either, a rug is a whole different kettle of fish compared to wall to wall carpet. Find someone with qualifications to clean rugs.

Professional cleaners can diagnose your rug's problems and work to fix them. They probably have expensive specialised machinery specifically for rug cleaning that allows them to properly clean your rug.

There is no substitute for a professional clean especially because it reduces the risk of damage or harm to your rug. You can be assured that a qualified rug cleaner won't just take it out to the driveway for a quick once over. They will choose the appropriate method for that specific rug, because different types of rugs need different processes.

Without professional cleaning, the life of your rug will be shortened no matter how much home maintenance you put in. Do both of these things though and you can extend the life of your rug by years.

Few Facts About Mold Removal

Many people take mold or fungus as a trivial matter and very lightly. They often don't consider it as a serious issue, unless it appears in big size. However, many of us don't realize the adverse effects of not having mold removal done quickly. It could lead to unwanted health issues and some of these symptoms consist of allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems.

Where does it grow: As we all know that most of the mold growth takes place inside a wall or floor cavities. Typically, they are not visible and it becomes hard to determine the extent of its growth and origin. It of course requires proper inspection, assessment, and removal to avert any kind of future growth. Sometimes, it is difficult to detect the growth, as it can be right under your carpet, behind the wallpaper or dry wall or even hiding invisibly in HVAc systems.

Applying best methods: One of the popular methods is the mold remediation process, which consists of grubbing and clearing out mold growth right from its roots. The mold is cleansed out perfectly from all kind of surface areas and this includes appliances, furnishings, and other belongings. The process of mold remediation involves the process of eradicating, isolating, and cleaning up of materials that is infected with the mold.

Generally, mold removal is done by efficient professionals. This is a smart and safe way to deal with it swiftly, as they ensure that the job is done perfectly with the latest tools and sophisticated techniques.

Blocking the Black Mold:

One of the most frequently observed kinds of mold is the black mold. It can be often located in moist areas, little cracks, and it is highly toxic. Bathrooms and house basements are the prime locations for its growth. No wonder, sometimes we could even find it on countertops, if it is not kept dry properly. If you find it in a small space, then it can be simply cleared up with water and bleach. One of the best ways to avoid its formation is by keeping bathrooms and other places dry and clean, as excess moisture will be the best breeding area for the unwanted black mold. So if you find any leaky taps, it is good to get it repaired quickly to prevent excess moisture. There are also plenty of products in the market that can effectively remove the black mold. Although, availing services of professionals in removing it can be a better idea, as it will not be a costly proposition.

Eliminating Fountain Pen Ink Stains on the Carpet

Keeping a carpet clean and beautiful is more challenging than many people realize. There are many kinds of carpet cleaning problems which can happen on your carpet on a daily basis. From stains, marks, and spills, the homeowner is definitely going to have a hard time in keeping the carpet spic n' span.

One of the tougher carpet cleaning problems that a homeowner can deal with is cleaning fountain pen ink which has spilled all over the carpet. This is tough because it can create a very ugly stain which can really affect the carpet's appearance. It is also very difficult to remove since it can get deep into the carpet fibers and become very stubborn to get rid of.

But cleaning up this kind of mess is thankfully not an impossibility. If you want to learn how to get rid of this carpet cleaning problem, just follow the guide below.

• Remove as much of the fountain pen ink on the carpet by using some paper towels and blotting the spill. Never rub the spilled area as you will just be making things worse. Only blot the stains carefully to avoid complications.

• Next, pour some isopropyl alcohol an a cotton ball or a cloth. Then, use the cotton ball or cloth to once again blot the affected area. This aids in breaking down the ink stain and making it easier to remove using the succeeding steps. Continue blotting until there is no more ink transferring onto the cloth.

• Afterwards, you need to make a cleaning solution which will help remove the stain. For this, you just need to mix a teaspoon of non-bleach laundry detergent with a ¾ liter of water. Just make sure to use the non-bleach laundry detergent as bleach can end up damaging your carpet instead of cleaning it.

• Once you have prepared the cleaning solution, apply it onto the stained area of the carpet and then get a clean white cloth to blot the stain once again. This will help remove the stain from the carpet and onto the cloth's surface. Repeat this step until the entire stain is gone.

• Lastly, rinse the area you just cleaned with some water and then dry it up using a wet/dry vac.

You see, ink from your fountain pen spilled on the carpet doesn't have to be a nightmare for carpet owners. Just use the simple guide above and soon you'll get rid of the ink stain easily.

Pet Urine - How to Remove the Urine Smell From Carpets

In order to remove pet urine smell from carpets, it is important to first understand how the odor is caused, and what deodorization implies. It will then be easy to choose and apply the most effective and relevant procedures.

The main component of freshly excreted urine is uric acid, which is just slightly acidic. Other constituents include enzymes, cholesterol, urea and trace amounts of other chemicals. The offensive smell is quickly generated as the water evaporates and it is transformed into a mild alkaline. That is why it becomes stronger under humid conditions, or when the carpet is wet. These urine salts also provide a perfect breeding ground for many kinds of microorganisms, whose metabolic byproducts also contribute to the bad odor.

Incidentally, the yellowish color is a result of rapid oxidation of acidic components in the urine.

Generally, deodorization of carpet is accomplished by applying the following types of chemicals:

Odor Substitutes. These will mask the smell by exchanging it for one with a more pleasant odor - like perfume.Combiners. These will pair and react with the odor molecule and neutralize it.Enzymes. These will break down proteins and digest waste solids so that the odor causing microorganism dies for lack of food.Disinfectants. These will also kill bacteria, but will have no effect on other chemicals which may be the source of the odors

One potential problem with urine smell removal from carpet, is that the urine spots may not always be readily visible. Sometimes, the yellow stain may not appear, and this is particularly problematic, especially when the carpet is orange or brown in color. The solution to this, is to use an ultraviolet or "black" light to locate the stains, which will show up in the dark under these conditions.

If there is too much lighting in the room, it will probably be necessary to use a high intensity UV light source.

Once the problem area is identified, it should be sprayed with an acidic solution to decompose the alkaline salts and residues on the carpet fibers. Most janitorial or cleaning supply shops will carry suitable tannin, coffee or urine treatment spotters which will do the job. The chemical should then be groomed into the fibers and left to react for at least 10 minutes.

Next, rinse the area with warm water and spray with an enzyme complex designed for urine neutralization treatment. Leave this on the carpet for 15 minutes.

The final step is to clean the carpet thoroughly, with the regular carpet cleaning procedures. Deep steam cleaning with truck-mounted equipment is the preferred method.

In cases of severe contamination, a disinfectant may be injected directly into the area, or sprayed directly over it. It may also need to be sprayed directly unto the carpet backing and substrate.

Generally speaking, odor substitutes should rarely be used, because they really do not remove the smell from the carpet, and only postpone the problem.

When all else fails to correct the problem, replace the pad under the carpet, treat the back and substrate, and then re-install and clean the carpet.

Who Should Have Mold Testing?

Mold testing is one of the most important things you can do in your home or place of business. Though most people contribute the risk to a black or green-colored development on their walls, there is much more to this bacteria than you may realize. This is a living organism that is invading your home and many times, it is impossible to know it is there. If you are dealing with any type of risk factor that could mean it is present, it may be time to take a few steps to get rid of it. The only way to know some forms are present is to have a professional conduct a test for it.

Why You Need It

There are many reasons why mold testing is a must in homes and businesses even when there are no outward signs of a problem. Because molds can grow on virtually any type of surface and they can grow very quickly, it is imperative that you take action to control them when they are present. Keep in mind that all they need to prosper is a moist location where there is oxygen present and some type of organic source to use as food.

Water Presence

One of the most important times to have this type of test is when you have had any type of water damage in the space. Any surface left wet for 18 hours or more is potentially at risk for the development of molds. Sometimes, this happens even sooner. By having a test performed, you will know if the surface is at risk as well as what is lurking in the air.

Humid Conditions

You may not realize it but the humidity in the air is enough to encourage the growth of some types of molds, including those that are very dangerous for people to ingest. In some areas of the country, though, it is very hard to control the amount of humidity present. Air conditioning can help. However, it is very important to test for the presence of these molds in these conditions to ensure nothing is growing in the area that should not be.

Mold testing is not a complex process but it is important to have a professional do it whenever it is possible. This will help ensure that you have an accurate test that can pinpoint any type of molds present as well as their location. Treatment options are easier only when you have an idea of what you are up against. Once the testing is complete, the next step is to find a solution for getting rid of anything you find in the location to prevent people from breathing it in.

Cleaning: Why You Should Consider Hiring a Cleaning Company for Your Home

Families are extremely busy these days. It's not uncommon now in a two-parent household to have both parents working full-time, and for those couples who have children in school and involved in other activities, time is a very precious commodity. In all of the commotion of work, the various errands that need to be run and the taxing around of family members to different places, household chores can get lost in the shuffle, which can add even more stress to an already-stressful situation. This is just one reason many families turn to a professional cleaning company to take care of keeping their home tidy.

A cleaning company, also called a maid service, provides one or more trained cleaning specialists who come in either on a one-time basis or in regularly-scheduled intervals to take care of your household cleaning needs. Furniture is dusted, windows are wiped, floors are vacuumed, and other steps are taken to get your home looking as it should. All of this while you're free to go about your business and knock a few tasks off of your to-do list.

If you're a self-employed freelancer, hiring a cleaning service can also save you money. The time you'd otherwise feel compelled to clean up your home can instead be spent completing more work and bringing in more money. A maid can handle the cleaning work you'd otherwise have to handle yourself.

Health is another reason families tend to hire cleaning services. After all, house cleaning can be a very dirty task to tackle, and the bacteria and other germs that could be spread around the home can pass on colds and other illnesses. Not only that, but unless you're a pro at cleaning your own home like the specialists most cleaning services hire, you're bound to miss some very important areas.

Whether you're a member of the busy family, someone who works from home, or simply someone who is concerned with keeping their home as clean and free of germs as possible, a cleaning service is a great step to take in order to take back some of your own time, save some money, and stay more healthy. Be sure to keep your eye open for cleaners who are both insured and bonded, and ask around for reviews from friends and family members who have hired cleaning services in the past. Hiring a maid service can be a very helpful experience for those who find the right company.

Leather Spotting

There are special leather liquid spot and stain removers that are safe to use to remove spots and stains when dry cleaning suedes and leathers just as there are spotters for cloth items.

The spotters made for use on cloth are not usually designed to be used on suede and leather as they will have a harmful effect on the leather skins. They will usually result in color loss and hardening of the skins.

The only liquid stain and spot remover chemicals that should ever be allowed to directly contact suedes and leathers are those that are designed specifically for use on suedes and leathers. Any other spotters will usually result in an unnecessary damage claim.

Unlike spotters manufactured for use on cloth items, some leather spotters are made to be used on both leathers and cloth.

This simplifies the spotting procedures in that the same spotting agent can be used for both the leather and the cloth portions of the leather or suede instead of having to use two spotting agents - one for the leather portions and another for the cloth portions.

Prespotting water soluble spots and stains

To loosen and dissolve water-soluble spots and stains such as perspiration, beverages, food, blood and for general soil removal from items before cleaning, it will be necessary to use a specially formulated safe leather product designed to remove waterborne spots and stains.

Ideally, use of a prespotter specifically formulated for use on suede, leather, fur and trimmed cloth items will not remove colors or harden the skins while at the same time being highly effective on the cloth portions of suede, leather and fur items.

Safe leather prespotter

This color safe prespotter should be a liquid product that can be applied to any type of suede, leather, fur with a cloth lining or cloth trim by spraying it on any soiled or stained areas using a handheld trigger sprayer, a pressure tank sprayer, the spotting gun sprayer (without any steam) or with a spray gun.

This prespotter should be most effective on suede, leather, fur and cloth when applied full strength.

When used on cloth only, the prespotter may be mixed with water in a ratio of up to four parts water and one part prespotter.

Brushing the prespotter

The ideal leather prespotter should be formulated so that it may be allowed to dry on the suede or leather before it is cleaned or it may be cleaned while still wet when the leather cleaning system is conditioned with a specially formulated detergent conditioner, which will emulsify the prespotter while it conditions the dry cleaning fluid to prevent color loss or stiffening of the skin. Thus, the suede or leather item that has been spotted with the leather prespotter may be cleaned either wet, immediately after it is prespotted, or after it has dried.

With such products, leather can be cleaned whenever it is convenient for the operator.

However, for heavily soiled items it is good practice to wait at least a half-hour before cleaning. This will allow the chemicals in the leather prespotter time to work to loosen the soil and stains before cleaning.

Since this special leather prespotter allows the suedes or leathers to be cleaned immediately or later in the day, the following day or even several days later, it permits considerable scheduling flexibility in the prespotting portion of the leather cleaning process.

For example, if the prespotter is used at the end of the day, it may not be convenient to clean the leather at that time, but it may be cleaned the next day after it has dried.

So, if the actual leather cleaning is to be done only once or twice a week, the prespotting can be done at any time it is convenient for the operator during the week, as time permits.

However, furs spotted with prespotter should be allowed to air dry thoroughly before cleaning to protect the delicate fur skin from damage.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning - How the Pros Do It

In the carpet cleaning industry, there is a lot of fights amongst the companies. All of them are trying to be the first in the branch, which adequately provides a high competition. Sometimes the work of the carpet cleaners can involve a lot of difficulties. As any commercial cleaning employees that have to be available in the day, sometimes they are required to take night shifts and even work in the weekends. However, none of these professionals can survive in the cleaning industry without a handful amount of cleaning techniques.

Here, in this article I can present you some of them, such as carpet steam cleaning, shampoo cleaning, quick dry carpet cleaning and spot cleaning.

Carpet steam cleaning

This method is widely used nowadays. It involves setting up of a steam cleaning machine that uses vacuum and cleaning solution. It looks like a bigger vacuum cleaner, but its technology is kinda different. It releases cleaning solution and steam deep into the surface of the carpet. However, one of its disadvantages is that it leaves the carpet moisten, no matter the dry pass of the area with the wand. This particular method is good for offices and also areas with tight spaces. The carpet has to dry for a few days after the procedure.

Carpet shampoo Cleaning

Again a machine is involved in this method, as the carpet steam cleaning. However, the machine is called floor buffer, also known as rotary floor machine. To successfully use this machine, mix carpet shampoo using the manufacturer's manual. You can also make a pre-treatment with a vacuum cleaner, so any solid debris and dirt can be cleaned. This will ease the machine's cleaning efforts. You should note that this cleaner should be moved in circular motion, when the shampoo is released and back-and-forth, when you are proceeding to the next area. This method is good when it comes to heavy polluted areas, like a traffic path or building entries.

Spot cleaning

This is not a type of cleaning actually, but more like a good preparation. The spot cleaning involves a handful amount of different chemical cleaners on hand. It is a must for every professional to have rust, gum and, of course, all-purpose spot removers. You never know what type of pollution you are going to face, so better be prepared, especially if you are claiming to provide good carpet cleaning service.

Dry carpet cleaning

This method is very similar to the shampoo cleaning. It actually uses the same machine, but it just requires different set of attachments and tools. The dry carpet cleaning is especially useful when it comes to quick and complete cleaning of any commercial area. It is widely used in busy places and by hotels, as they need fast and efficient cleaning to keep up with their work. The actual procedure involves an attachment called bonnet pad. It looks like a flat and round mop and it does the cleaning. A cleaning solution is also used and it is poured into the cleaning machine. However, a pre-treatment should be performed in order to increase the cleaning results. This tip goes not only for carpet cleaning, but many other cleaning tasks.

Five Simple Steps to Follow When Hiring A Professional Carpet Cleaning Company

Ok so your spouse tells you " honey for the last time!!! its long overdue to get these nasty carpets cleaned". Have you ever heard that before? well your not alone. The national carpet retail companies recommend having your carpets professional cleaned at least 12-18 months depending on your quality and quantity of traffic. It can be a painful process to invite a perfect stranger into your home to clean your carpets. Not only do you not know these guys... there is tons of prep work to get the house ready to be cleaned... or so you have always thought. The truth is its not really that difficult. In this article I will go over all the steps to make this a painless process. But take notice there is a little bit of time and effort you must go endure.

Step One: Research Your Local Carpet Cleaning Companies

It is imperative that you do some basic research. There are several ways to do this but Google, Yahoo or Bing is usually a great place to start. Just simply go to your search engine and type " Carpet Cleaning [your city name]" and you will see a list of companies provided by that search engine in your local area. Pay close attention to the reviews that are posted to each one of the cleaners. If you see one that has only positive results then you probably want to be wary of that one because the reviews could be fixed. It is always best to look for the one that has the most reviews and carefully read the reviews to see what other customers have said about that company.

If you have a friend or relative that has used a carpet cleaning company in the past and had good results then that is by far the best method.

Step Two: VERIFY VERIFY VERIFY

Take the time visit the companies website and see what certifications they have. Any good company will have cleaning certifications associated with their trade. Also look for uniforms and commercial vehicles.

The absolute most important thing you should verify with the company you choose is their PROOF OF INSURANCE. This cannot be overlooked by no stretch of the imagination. ANY reputable carpet cleaning company will readily have this available for you to view. Also you can check with the BBB about the companies ratings and see if what their record is in your local community.

Step Three: Ask for References

Ok so you have done your research... Verified Insurance.... Now call the company and ask for some references. It should be easy for the company to give you 3-5 names of customers or business in your local area that would not mind you calling them and asking some questions about the services that was provided to them. Just make sure they are not giving you their friends or relatives phone numbers. Always ask how long ago it was that their carpets were serviced.

Step Four: Ask for a Money Back Guarantee

ALL carpet cleaning companies that are worth their salt will give you a MONEY BACK guarantee with NO questions asked. Carpet Cleaning is not rocket science and if your carpet is not damaged in some way it should come clean. All good companies are confident they can satisfy you and they will be eager to offer you a money back guarantee to prove they know what they are doing. This is the norm.

Final Step Five: Schedule and Prep.

The final step is to call the company and schedule your appointment. And always try to get a morning appointment so that your carpet has the warm daytime to dry.

Then just pick up the loose items on your floor and your ready!!!

NOTE: It is ok to vacuum before the carpet cleaning company arrives but it is really not necessary. All good companies vacuum before they clean.

Now do your new company and all other consumers a huge favor. Take five minutes and leave a review of your experience with your carpet cleaning company. Always remember its important to help others that will be going through this same process too.

You Can Learn How To Clean Window Screens

As time goes by your window screens can really collect a lot of dirt and debris. Bugs also collect in them and are difficult for you to remove. Dirty window screens look very tacky and take away from the overall appearance of your home. While learning how to clean window screens is simple, it is still the same as undertaking any other kind of project in that there are always specific tricks and tips that help the project along making it easier for you.

Spray It Out -

One very obvious way of cleaning them is to spray them off with water. This removes light soil quite effectively as long as it hasn't become embedded totally embedded in your mesh. Use a garden hose and spray off your window screens and get rid of debris and loose dirt.

The tougher stains and dirt call for more drastic measures. Learning how to clean screens using a pressure washer will save you loads of time and energy. Just about any pressure washer will do the job well. All it takes is plain water and the amount of pressure you need is from light to medium. This will enable you to blast out all the dirt from your wire mesh.

When most people are learning how to clean windows and screens using a pressure washer, it seems logical to use high pressure to do the job better and quicker. However, an increase in pressure against the delicate mesh can actually cause your window screens to rip and even separate from the frame.

Use A Quality Degreaser -

There are times when your screens get dirt stuck in them that is greasy, thick, and nearly impossible to get out just using plain water. You can find plenty of all-purpose degreasers like 'Purple Power' to enable you to spritz your screens and then spray them until they are clean. Another good tip for learning how to clean window screens is to get yourself a soft bristle brush to use. A brush can be a big help in loosening up the dirt and making it easier to remove. Once you have applied the degreaser and then used your brush all you need to do is spray them and rinse them off with either your garden hose or pressure washer.

Use Boiling Water -

One trick that people don't think about when they learn how to clean window screens is to use boiling water. The heat of the boiling water may be able to break down some of the grease and grime that would not respond to degreasers.

The boiling water works to break down the bonds that exist between the grease and the dirt and might just leave your window screens totally clean. To use this method just submerge your screens in the boiling water for about five minutes. You can use a bath tub or any shallow container big enough to hold your screens.

Use A Clothes Washer -

If your screens happen to be made of vinyl mesh, then it could be entirely possible for you to remove the stubborn dirt with your clothes washer. Most people have never heard about this technique but it just might save you a lot of frustration when you are learning how to clean their screens. You will need to disassemble your window screen frame and have the ability to re-assemble it afterwards. This should not be a big problem.

You should wash your screens with the water set on 'hot' and the washer is set on 'gentle cycle'. Do not take the spin option. After your screens have finished you can lay them out with something on top to help them maintain their shape.

A House Cleaning Checklist to Consider When Hiring

For those who plan to hire professionals for house cleaning services, it can help to have a solid understanding of what your options are before you even begin considering the options. In many cases, you will need to look around your home with the professional to determine what things you need to have them do and what you do not need done. During this initial meeting, you will learn what tasks can be done and which may be more expensive. You will also learn what the cost of this product will be for your needs.

Look Around Your Home

Before you bring anyone into your home for your house cleaning needs, it is a good idea to walk around the location and to make a list of the numerous tasks that you need to have completed. This process will provide an opportunity for you to gather your thoughts and desires from this service. Here are some things to keep in mind when making this type of checklist.

• Most of the time, the company will handle most light duty tasks for you with a basic service. This includes dusting, cleaning countertops and scrubbing toilets. These are the types of tasks most need done all the time.

• If you are looking for help with organizational steps, this may be something the company offers as well, but it may not be. You will need to talk to the company about how much extra this will cost, too.

• You may need to consider additional tasks that you would like done that may not need to be done every visit. For example, some companies do offer services on a charge per time done. This may include detailed appliance cleaning, windows and carpeting cleaning.

• Look through your home and determine which rooms need regular care. If some do not, it is a good idea for you to put these to the side to keep the costs lower. However, you may be able to get more rooms for less money. Find out from the company how it charges.

• Discuss the overall limitations in the service the company provides. Some companies do not do specific types of tasks. Ask for this information before you invest in that company.

The more you know about your needs for house cleaning, the more prepared you will be when the company does visit for a tour. Know what you want and you may be able to negotiate for additional options as you go. Do not put off calling these professionals, though. Many times, they can provide you with exactly what you need and more for less than you would expect.

By following the tips listed here you can save money in the long run by extending the life of your whiteboard; however, if you do end up with a large whiteboard that is no longer serviceable, you can resurface the white board to bring back the smooth surface.

Whiteboard Maintenance Tips To Extend The Life Of Your Large Whiteboard

1. Use new dry erase markers

Replace markers as soon as they begin to dry or show excessive fraying. Continued use of markers in poor shape can result in scratches and disfiguration of your whiteboard, causing permanent damage. Consider the cost of the dry erase markers to your whiteboards and replace the markers as soon as possible.

2. Do not leave writing on for long periods

If possible, do not let dry erase marker ink stay on the board for more than a few days. Although most whiteboards have excellent surfaces nowadays they can still stain or "ghost" (showing an image of the mark after being erased). Wipe off the board after a couple of days - if the writing is very important and it is not a smart board, take a picture or copy the notes onto paper.

3. Use board cleaner once a month

After wiping off the board of any dry erase marks, use a whiteboard cleaner and a soft rag or towel to clean off the surface. Performing this action will save you a lot of money in the long run as it drastically lengthens the life of a whiteboard. Considering the cost of a large whiteboard the two or three minutes this will take is a no brainer. This is nearly all you have to do to learn how to clean a whiteboard.

Resurfacing A Whiteboard

If the surface has been damaged and no longer functions properly you still have options before spending several hundreds of dollars or more on a new board. Transparent dry erase whiteboard paint exists that can be painted over the surface of the board to bring back the smooth surface that is needed for a like new whiteboard. Application is much like a normal paint; after waiting a few days for the paint to dry you can begin using your board again.
